Prefect Body 2013

The Dominican Convent High School has given us a great learning experience but not only has it been an academic institution, it has been our chance to show our capabilities by working in an inspired team. We have worn our uniform not only with pride but with understanding of the responsibilities that come with it.

School life has been thoroughly enjoyable. We believe that starting your day with a prayer and meditation on God’s word at school has contributed immensely in building our characters. It gives a solid foundation with which to face the day and its challenges. As a catholic institution, we pride our self in Jesus and the fact that he leads us each day. The joyous songs we sing show our passion and this joy is with us through each lesson as we learn passionately.

Our various themes for the term have been a great highlight with each student looking forward to them with great enthusiasm. Each term carries a different theme such as G2, PS2 and passionately learning and passionately teaching.G2 stands for greet and gratitude. It concentrated mainly on greeting teachers, seniors, visitors and each other. I believe this has lead to greater unity amongst all the students. It has reinforced the fact that we are a family filled with love, peace and happiness. Greeting also looked at greeting visitors to the school in order to make them feel welcome and give the experience of the Convent family that is the warmth and friendliness we feel for one another. The other G stands for gratitude. Gratitude towards God for life and his blessings and gratitude towards our parents and teachers, appreciating their hard work in making us well equipped young ladies.G2 even had a song to it, composed by one of the students to which everyone sang along. It signified the beginning of a new kind of love, the “Convent Love.”

PS2 is one of our themes which people greeted with great enthusiasm. The P stands for punctuality, punctuality when going for lessons, coming for school, going for sporting activity and in every aspect of life. Because practice makes perfect, the practice we got in punctuality in making us well mannered ladies whose appreciation of time has been elevated. The S2 stands for (Smartness) 2. Smartness in terms of intelligence and well organized young ladies. Administration reinforced the fact that we are all intelligent but it is only up to us to work hard in order to maximize our potential. After all, our destiny lies in our own hands. The verse Jeremiah 29:11 played a pivotal role during this period. All of the students became aware of the power within themselves. Not only did we become intellectually developed, we are now well groomed ladies, whose sense of style cannot be surpassed. Today we stand proud because we now represent “Beauty with Brains.”

Passionately learning, passionately teaching is our theme for the current term. It has been emphasized that in order to learn successfully,, we need to be passionate, to do our homework and classwork with great zeal as well as partake in sporting activities with commitment. This theme also incorporated the staff, who have shown great commitment to their chosen profession.

The research and IT facilities have gone a long way in making us the learners we are today. The Reference Library has proven to be a great resource in every subject. It has the best reference points for various research topics and even has a career guidance corner. Sister Clarina has managed to incorporate an internet centre for internet surfing during research.
What has touched our hearts has been the fact that not only does the school care about our current ventures but cares immensely also for our futures. This has been evident in the many career guidance expos we have had. Also, the school has organized university talks with universities as far as Canada, United States of America and South Africa. The university application process has been made simple because the school gives guidelines and helps all apply for university.

We have enjoyed our fundraising activities which have made us realize how fortunate we are to have so much and that it is our role to give back to the community. Most of the funds raised were donated to Sontala, our adopted sister school in Kezi. Books, Easter eggs, stationery, juice and buckets were purchased for both Sontala Secondary and Primary. Donations were made to Mpilo Hospital, Sobukazi, Mzilikazi High and Queen Elizabeth Home. Fundraising activities have included selling roses on Valentine’s Day which was not only an enjoyable activity but made the day exciting as well. Shoe polishing has been one of the fundraisers which has proved to be a great money making scheme. Raffle tickets have been a great way of making money and this year the school purchased clever boards and laptops for visual lessons.

To us success in inevitable and we thrive to excel in all that we do.  To crown it all, the Dominican Convent High School is not just an institution but it is the highway to excellence, where leaders are made and place where only the best is good enough.
